Old naira notes

By Ambrose Ologide, Warri

Inspite of the Supreme Court order , restraining the Federal Government from rejecting the old currency, there was apprehension among residents of Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas over the use of the old currency at as the time of filing this report .

The apprehension caused panic and confusion in markets in both local government areas monitored by our correspondent.

At the popular Small Market in Warri Garage , Igbudu markets and some other business places , there was uncertainty on whether to accept old currency or not .

A filling station in Airport located to a popular eatery was alleged to have outrightly rejected the old currency.

Another filling station along Jakpa Road Effurun Uvwie Local Government Area was also alleged to have rejected the old currency.

The two filling stations were closed for business when our correspondent went for confirmation of their alleged rejection of old currency on Saturday 11 February, 2023.

A filling station in Ometan / Lower Erejuwa area was also among filling stations that allegedly rejected the old currency.

Staffs of the said filling station also refused to talk to press on the issue .

Our correspondent had an encounter with a commercial tricycle ( keke ) that bluntly rejected the old currency in Warri.

However the old currency was still accepted in most places monitored by our correspondent in both local government areas as at the time of filing this report .

Meanwhile there was unconfirmed report that erring filling stations were made to give out their products free of charge by the monitoring team.

Effort to confirm the report by our correspondent at the time of filling this report was not successful.
