Scene of the extra judicial killing when ASP Nuhu Usman shot and killed the restrained victim Oghenemine Ogidi
By John Egie
1,332 police officers serving in Delta State Command have been transferred to various states within the South-South and South-East regions.
The transfer is sequel to the recent extra judicial killing of one Oghenemine Ogidi in Effurun Area Command by ASP Nuhu Usman on Sunday, April 26, 2926.
Oghenemine was involved in a way bill saga at the Benin Motor park along Warri-Sapele Expressway, which parcel content turned out to be a Berreta Pistol.
Oghenemine was apprehended, restrained with the notorious Okporoko tying before a police crack team led by ASP Nuhu Usman known by the moniker Ogbegbe-gun shooter- was called in to handle the case.
ASP Nuhu Usman took the suspect to the Area Command office where in the broad day light in the presence of other officers shot the suspect dead in spite of pleas for his life and pledge to take ASP Nuhu Usman to the owner of the parcel in Sapele.
The incident attracted public outcry, local and global condemnation, portraying the image of the Nigeria police force in bad light.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu immediately ordered the arrest of the villain and other officers associated with Nuhu Usman and in a swift judicial process, ASP Nuhu Usman was dismissed by a police disciplinary committee.

ASP Nuhu Usman (dismissed from service) in cuffs before the dismissal.
The dismissal was ratified by the Police Service Commission and he has since been handed over to the Attorney-General of the federation for prosecution.
The public outcry against the crime has continued even after the dismissal with Omoyele Sowore, activist and President of Revolution Now calling for outright transfer of all officers in the Delta State Command.
The letter of the transfer indicated that the 1, 332 police officers were distributed to Enugu, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra states.
Reactions
Reactions on social media hailed the action of the IGP but wished that the postings would have been to states in Northern Nigeria like Zamfara, Kastina, Yobe states as over 80 per cent of the affected officers bear names with cultural links to ethnic nationalities from the north .
There were reservations , however, that as often had been the case, some of the affected officers will work their transfers back to Delta state and continue their impunity in professional misconduct.
Facebook user, Victor Akpojotor, in a comment said, ” Please dear IG they are needed in Zamfara, Kastina and Yobe states.
Rita Nwokobia hailed the IGP’s action saying, “Nice transfer, this people are really killing our youths.
Allyberry Amaka Gold in her comment expressed dissatisfaction with the posting of the officers to Enugu, Edo, Abia, Imo, Anambra suggesting, “”These men should have been transferred to Borno, Kogi,, Abuja, Kebbi and Sokoto states.”
Agreeing with Amaka, Bartho Barthos said, ” As dem sabi dey quick respond to issues and shoot correctly, the IG for carry all of them to North so that dem go fight Boko”.
Samuel Ekiyor also hailed the IGP action saying, ” Delta State Police Command has been in a mess for years, I hope the new officers that will come in will be of good behaviour. This is a good move I must say.
An elated Peter Matthew Aghogho was all thanks to God for the transfer saying, “This feat of transferring almost 90 per cent of officers and men of Delta State Police Command to other different states is good so that they can go and learn better policing and be positively influenced by good police officers in their new states.
” Wetin…dis dia own too much”, he said accusing most of the police personnel in Delta State of involvement in excessive professional misconduct: harassing, intimidating, extorting, victimising and killing innocent Deltans all because of money and promotion on the blood and sweat of innocent Nigerians in Delta State.
“This was one of my prayers to the IGP, Tunji Disu. We have been shouting, screaming, wailing, appealing and rolling on the ground to get the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command to address the excesses, evil and wickedness of many of the police officers in Delta State to no avail. Instead of the CP to address the issue he will send Bright Edafe the PPRO to come and use grammar cover up for the bad eggs until God has exposed them with #OfficerAbeg
Another Facebook user, Bright Daniel Ndu pointed at systemic failure saying, ” The sad thing about the systemic problem is that personnel changes have very little effect on new outcomes if there are no astute measures put in place to fix the system.
He said the new police officers who will replace the transferred personnel will come, observe the culture of the environment and deploy the same impunity.
” Take Nuhu Usman up North-West or North-East and he wouldn’t dare that nonsense he did (at least in broad day light). This is not because police up north is any different, but there is an unspoken culture of consequences that await such display and the institution itself avoids it.
“If in police headquarters, Asaba where Commissioner of Police sits, still they collect bail money, how then do you expect a police station in Patani to be any different?
“If IGP Disu is serious with business let them be proactive. Not wait for public outcry to react because for every one Oghenemine ((the murdered victim) there are hundreds of victims whose stories could never be heard.
ASP Nuhu Usman has been accused of complicity to the movement of the gun and hence, he shot and killed the victim to shut him up.
Critics cast aspersions on the police institution and leadership of the Delta State Command especially with the impunity with which Nuhu Usman murdered Oghenemine in broad day light, in front of the police station with no senior police officer rebuking him.
A critic claimed that the impunity is an indication that ASP Nuhu Usman was highly connected in the police force and beyond and hence, he could carry out any professional misconduct and nothing will happen .
It is on record that he exhibited the same non challant, I don’t care excesses even extra judicial killings in Kwale where he was serving and hence was petitioned to the House of Reps but did not face any disciplinary action except that he was transferred to Illah, Jesse and then to Effurun Area Command where he killed Oghenemine Ogidi in cold blood.
Unverified sources claimed that while in Jesse, ASP Nuhu Usman had contact with some bad guys in Sapele one of whom could have been the person who contracted the late Oghenemine to send the gun to Sapele through way bill.
The transfer letter referenced, CH:5360/FS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.42/182 from the IGP, Office of the Force Secretary Nigeria Police, Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, Shehu Shagari Way, Central Area, Abuja and dated 3rd May, 2026 directed all the officers transferred to proceed to their new commands with immediate effect.
The IGP further directed receiving commands to unfailingly furnish details to the IGP Secretariat and Office of Force Secretary of transferees who report or otherwise on or before 22nd May, 2026.
The transfer letter was signed by AIG Bode Akinbamilowo (Force Secretary) on behalf of the IGP.
Critics were quick to point out an error as the list of transferred police personnel showed that the dismissed killer policeman, ASP Nuhu Usman who stood on number 976 on the list was transferred to Imo State.
