Custodial visits: Delta Chief Judge releases 7 inmates after review of 1228 warrants

The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Tessy Diai, has released 7 awaiting trial inmates during the first quarter visits to Custodial Centres across the state.

While addressing stakeholders at the Ogwashi Uku Custodial Centre on Friday, 21st March, Justice Diai explained that the inmates released was done based on the legal advice of the Director of Public Prosecution, (DPP) Mr. Anthony. Ogheneovo Orhorhorho, that the inmates had no case to answer.

The Delta Chief Judge giving the summary of the exercise which began in Warri Correctional Centre said, the visit commenced on 10th March 2025 , with a total of 350 Warrants reviewed and 1 person regaining freedom in that Centre.

She added that in Sapele, 138 Warrants were reviewed, non released while in Sapele remand Home, 10 Warrants reviewed, non released while at Kwale, 181 reviewed with 1 person breathing air of freedom for the first time after spending reasonable time behind Bars on Arson and Kidnapping charges.

She explained further that at Agbor, 135 Warrants were reviewed, and non released which climaxed the exercise at Ogwashi-Uku at a later day where a total of 428 Warrants reviewed with 5 persons regaining freedom bringing it to a total of 1228 Inmates Warrants reviewed with non granted bail across the State.

The elated Delta Chief Judge, appreciated everyone who participated in the exercise in the State including the DPP with his team for their diligence and hard work which translated into faster and smoother dispensation of Justice in the state.

She added that the essence of the visit was to ensure that custody cases are going on smoothly in courts.

Those set free from the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre are, Yohanna Selnan, (m) John Tanko, Gwakman, Ventim Usman and Chukwuemeka Ugwu , all male.

Mr Chukwuemeka Ugwu said he was arrested for the crime of Robbery and Kidnapping which he knew nothing about.

The five persons released, appreciated the Chief Judge for setting them free while praying that God Almighty will continue to keep her alive to continue her good works for humanity.
