Police in Delta warn against jungle justice

Spynewsmedia October 11, 2023

CP Wale Abass

* Give report of performance in 102 days

By Jon Egie

Delta State Police Command has warned against extra judicial killing which in local parlance is called jungle justice.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass gave the warning during a press briefing held at the State Police Headquarters, Asaba; yesterday.

Apart from being an act of self-help, the CP described jungle justice is barbaric and capable of festering a circle of violence and lawlessness thereby sabotaging the prospect of having the fundamental human rights of the victims protected.

” In several instances, victims of self-help are attacked based on frivolous allegations without being allowed access to fair hearing”, he said and stressed that the Command would no longer tolerate such abuse of human right, as anyone who engages in such practice will be identified, fished out and dealt with in accordance with the law.

Giving report of the Command’s performance since July 1st till date, the CP said following a review of security strategies culminating in the deployment of DOPS Buffalo team, tactical teams and Command’s Special Anti-kidnap and cybercrime squad to troubled areas like Ekpan and Jesse Road where kidnapping was becoming the order of the day; 13 kidnappers, 7 armed robbers, 72 cultists were arrested while 9 kidnap victims were rescued.

According to him, 54 firearms, 286 ammunition and 195 cartridges were recovered within the period of 102 days.

“You will agree with me that Ekpan which used to be a troubled area is now very safe and residents can now go about their lawful businesses without fear of attack and molestation.

He thanked the State Government for it’s support to the Command, sister security agencies for their collaboration and citizens who gave useful, timely and credible information that helped the police in fighting crime.
