HRM Dr Emmanuel Ekemejewa Sideso ( JP) OON, Abe 1, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom has offered scholarship to 260 pupils and not 160 as erroneously published in some news media recently .
The correction was made by the coordinator of Abe 1 Scholarship Scheme , Dr ( Chief ) Samuel Jimoh Eshenake ( JP ) in a press briefing today in Effurun , Uvwie Local Government Area
He disclosed that the cost of cheques is # 3.2 million and that the cheques were presented to the beneficiaries at the Ovie of Uvwie Palace on Thursday 7th October, 2021
Eshenake who is also the secretary of Uvwie traditional council of chiefs and Unuevworo ( traditional mouth piece ) of Etch R ‘ Ohorie ( traditional administrative unit ) in Uvwie Kingdom further disclosed that non indigenes in Uvwie Local Government Area were beneficiaries of the scheme that was established over ten years ago.
On his part, the Chairman of the scholarship scheme, Professor John Arubayi who spoke at the event disclosed that beneficiaries were selected on merit through a written examination.
He however assured that serious pupils could benefit from the scheme up to university level.
He disclosed further that the beneficiaries were in basic , secondary and tertiary categories.
Arubayi expressed appreciation to the Uvwie monarch for the establishment of the scheme .
He also expressed appreciation to Uvwie chiefs for their financial contributions towards the scholarship scheme.
In his remarks, Abe 1, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom stated that education was his foremost priority in his rulership of Uvwie Kingdom,
noting that education was the key to any meaningful development.
The traditional ruler was also full of praises to Uvwie chiefs and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for their financial contributions towards the scholarship scheme.
A physically challenged parent of one of the beneficiaries, Patience Ogbe who spoke to journalists at the event lauded and appreciated the Uvwie monarch for the establishment of the scheme .
She noted that the monarch’s gesture has shown that the traditional ruler has both indigenes and non indigenes of Uvwie at heart.
” God bless him for putting smiles on the faces of the less privileged ” She added.
The President – General of Uvwie General Improvement Union ( UGIU) Chief Hope Abovi Erute noted that the scheme was a great relief to parents of the beneficiaries at the present prevailing economic crunch in the country.
He noted that government cannot provide free education at all levels.
The Chairman of Media Committee of the Ovie of Uvwie Palace, Chief Fidelis Adjeke ( JP ) and , a respected palace chief, Chief Sunny Popo who spoke to journalists in brief media chat, congratulated beneficiaries of the scheme.
They however urged beneficiaries to be serious with their studies so that they could benefit from the scheme up to university level.
