By Jon Egie
” We may have lost 2023 but in 2027, we will get Delta State. ”
These were the words of reassurance Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who represented Delta Central and immediate past Deputy Senate President of the Senate gave to his supporters during the occasion of his homecoming reception ceremony held at the Oil City Motel, Ughelli yesterday, Saturday, April 6.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege who departed the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja was accorded a warm Airport reception at the Osube Airport by his supporters who in a motorcade trailed the former DSP to the venue of the homecoming reception ceremony.
Speaking after a deluge of goodwill messages were presented by leaders of the All People’s Congress, APC across the State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege thanked his teeming supporters who were mobilised from all political wards across the state for the event and formed the mammoth crowd of his audience; for the huge support they gave to him to become a Senator of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from where he later emerged as the Deputy President of the Senate.and until the end of his tenure in office.
To begin, he called to remembrance the five faithful members of the APC who died in the creeks of the Niger Delta during the 2023 campaigns and called for observation of a minute of silence in their honour.
He said as governorship candidate of the APC in Delta State and also a legal personality, he accepted with all humility, the Supreme Court Judgement on the litigation over the true winner of that election .
“Before the election we were told that Delta State is PDP and during the campaigns and election days you came out and voted for me to prove them wrong. And for the first time the opposition had two senators but for the evil machinations and orchestrations of the wicked ones, Nwaoboshi would have been the senator representing Delta North.
” We gave our very best here in Delta State. We championed and fought for the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. We took his message of Renewed Hope Agenda to every nook and cranny and having been victorious, President Bola Tinubu has not disappointed us. When we championed his cause we had in regard his record as Lagos State Governor. And when he started his tenure we saw the downturn of the economy but when he put his foot forward we can see that the naira has started gaining grounds against the dollar. Let us continue to pray for him. In eight years he will turn everything around and Nigeria will be better. All we need is patience.
” This is my official homecoming, I will now be coming home for regular interaction with you and give feedback to Mr President as we prepare for 2027. We may have lost 2023 but in 2027 we will get back Delta State. ” Senator Ovie Omo-Agege enthused.
Early on, a deluge of goodwill messages and encomiums were poured on the former DSP by leaders of the party who eulogized his sterling political values and relevance to the APC political family. Most of the speakers believed the APC won the 2023 Governorship election in Delta State but for the verdict of the Supreme Court which said otherwise and hoped that should the opportunity present itself again, they would give the needed support to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to trounce the PDP.
Senator Ede Dafinone who currently represents Delta Central in the Senate and who was chairman of the occasion said the Urhobo nation was proud of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege while he served as Senator and Deputy President of the Senate. He noted that Ovie Omo-Agege raised the flag of the opposition for 16 years in Delta State and fronted the most successful election to dislodge PDP from Delta State.
“Even though the APC stands by the decision of the Supreme Court, we believe we won and so the party remains strongly behind Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in his future political endeavours.”
Chief Obigbor, the state Deputy chairman of the party described Ovie Omo-Agege as a dedicated and resilient political leader. He also believed Senator Ovie Omo-Agege won the 2023 Governorship election in Delta State, even though he did not question the integrity and wisdom of the Supreme Court and hoped that not too long, the APC would grab power in the state. He gave kudos to Ovie Omo-Agege for all the developmental projects he sited across the state especially the Federal University of Medical and Health Science, Kwale.
” This event is a witness to your selfless service to all ethnic nationalities across the state and we will never forget you”. He promised.
For the national publicity Secretary of the APC, Chief Felix Morka, Ovie Omo-Agege services were stellar.
” He is a man who served selflessly with passion and a record amazing accomplishments that flattened the record of performance of governors, especially in Delta State. He stepped out to seek to be governor so as to fix the mess that the ruling party had caused. Even though he was not declared the winner he has a lot to give to Delta in future. A new day will come when he will stand up again and we will stand with him so that we can take back our State.”
Senator Peter Nwaoboshi thanked Senator Ovie Omo-Agege for the support he gave him when “some cowards who can’t stand election put me in prison but today, I am vindicated and stand before you a free man. I have decided to be off politics for a year but decided to be here because of Ovie Omo-Agege. He may be junior in politics but he was the person who invited me to the APC. He is a man of honour. He stood with me as candidate of the Party for the Senate even though I was wrongly put in prison. When the chips are down we will know the animal that owns the bush.
” Ovie Omo-Agege, you won the election and produced two senators and a good number of members of the State House of Assembly . I will not run election again, all I look for now is for the younger ones, I am over 70. If you contest against my loyalists I will stop you. I will support Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as long as he remains committed and so far, he has not shown any trait of betrayal so I continue to support him. ” He vowed.
