Delta State Government has been urged to expedite action in fulfilling its promise of rebuilding Okuama community so that displaced indigenes of the community can return home.
Chief Wilson Okpubigho, President of Urhobo Social Club of Nigeria, Lagos made the appeal when the Club visited inmates of the Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp in Ewu-Urhob to donate relief materials, Saturday, August 10, 2024.
He said the Urhobo Social Club (USC) was pained by the sad incidence of killing of soldiers and the consequent sack of the Okuama community by the military leading to the establishment of the IDP Camp.
According to him, since the incidence occurred on March 14, 2024 USC have planned and reached out to the Delta State Government on steps to rehabilitate and resettle the IDPs.
Believing however, that government bureaucratic protocols would take time before the inmates would go home, USC decided to live up to its social responsibility to ensuring that the people’s welfare was not compromised while they remained in camp.
“USC is committed to the welfare of Urhobo and will not relent in its effort until government does the needful” Okpubigho said.
Responding, Chairman of the camp, Chief Abraham Ogbodo appreciated the donation and thanked the USC Club for the gesture. He appealed to other spirited Urhobo people and groups to also show concern, “since the inmates have to be alive and healthy before returning to their homes permanently.”
Relief material valued at over N3.5 million which include a live cow, 20 bags of 50kg rice and 10 bags of 50kg garri were handed over by Chief Wilson Okpubigho to Chief Abrahm Ogbodo on behalf of the 400 inmates in camp.
Meanwhile, seven babies (2 male, 5 female) have been born in the camp since its take-off. “The babies are healthy and so far, there has been no major health challenge or security breach”, Camp Commandant, Mr Augustine Owhofaria said.
