As part of activities to mark his 100 days in office as governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff F. O. Oborevwori has commissioned three projects at the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, in Isoko North and one project at Enwhe in Isoko South council areas of the state, declaring that one of the stands of his administration is to consolidate on the already established projects of the immediate past administration with a view to bringing such projects to fruition for the overall good of Deltans.
The projects he commissioned were the university administrative building, the university guest house as well as a 2.6KM university internal roads and the Okpolo/Enwhe/Uwheru Road in Ewhen which were started by the previous administration of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa but completed by his new administration.
Commissioning the projects at the university Thursday, September 14, 2023, Governor Oborevwori pointed out that he considered his stand of consolidating the past projects worthwhile as doing otherwise would amount to wastage of state funds, adding that his administration is committed to prudent management of state funds.
“Part of that is our commitment that project started by the last administration are not abandoned; that will amount to waste of funds because if those projects are abandoned, that money is wasted. I have promised Deltans that I will consolidate on already established projects and that is what we are doing,” he stated.
The governor who spoke after a prodigious welcome to the arena acknowledged the courage and vision of the immediate past governor in establishing the three new universities in the state including the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, which according to him is greatly helping the state and its people.
In his words: “I therefore, appreciate the immediate past Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for courage and vision in establishing the three new universities in the state. The truth is that our people are reaping the benefits of the already established universities. The people are happy with the already established universities. It is an undeniable fact that the state economy, local builders and artisans benefited during the construction. That is one of the huge benefits in investing in infrastructural development.”
He added: “This University was established when I was a speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. Immediately after the establishment, government began the process of improving the facilities of the University in line with its new status. The University has five reasonable structures on ground but some additional structures were needed for its smooth running. This ultra modern furnished administrative building comprises fully furnished office for the Vice Chancellor, Deputy, Bursar, Registrar and their staffs, 2.6km interlock Internal roads, University Guest House with 21 rooms and squash court, and Principal officers’ staff quarters.”
The governor also assured that his “administration will continue to … provide the necessary school infrastructures for a conducive learning climate for Deltans.”
Also speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Honourable Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tanukari, expressed satisfaction, that all the forty-five (45) academic programmes under six faculties that the university began with have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and that the school’s vision includes “technological innovations, hands-on-skills training and ground-breaking research, directed towards socio-economic development.”
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Jacob Snapp Oboreh, commended Governor Oborevwori’s for his M.O.R.E. agenda, describing it as a holistic roadmap for the advancement of Delta State.
Commissioning the Okpolo/Enwhe/Uwheru Road, the governor noted the Delta State government is committed to the welfare of the citizens despite financial challenges.
“Notwithstanding the current financial challenges, this administration has continued the construction and rehabilitation of roads and bridges in major metropolis and rural areas across the state with a view to further improving urban-rural integration and boosting trade and commerce. Some of these roads are completed and ready for commissioning while some are yet to be completed.
“I, therefore, enjoin all Deltans to remain peaceful and continue to support this administration in our effort to deliver on the promises of our M.O.R.E. agenda,” he stated.
