The Governorship election in Edo State is 9 days away; and in the face of the characteristic fierce disagreement and near violence indulgence; particularly amongst the front runner political parties, fear of the unknown looms in the polity.
Consequently, the Benin Monarch, HRM Oba Ewuare II in his usual proactive reaction towards ensuring peace, has directed the traditional ceremony of ‘Bisusu’.
‘Bisusu’ is the traditional ceremony of cleansing/waving away from the land all forms of calamities.
This was stated in an official circular: ‘BTC.A40/VOL.LVVI/231’ by the office of the private secretary of the Oba, dated 11 September, 2024, signed by Chief S.O. Osamwonuyi (Esere of Benin) for the Monarch; and availed the media in the State Capital, Benin on Wednesday, 11 September, 2024.
All Chiefs, Enigie (Dukes); Ikao (Leaders); Edionwere (Village Heads); and Igie Ohen (traditional priests) of various deities in the Kingdom have been directed to perform the traditional ceremony.
“This should be done with the traditional items that are normally used,” it was stated.
“The ceremony should be carried out with immediate effect to wave away evil out of our land, especially before, during and after the forth coming gubernatorial election in our dear State.”
