* Another 23-year-old to 5yrs in jail for car theft

By Hillary Obayangbon, Accra

An 18-year-old herdsman identified as Umaru Abdulai, has been apprehended by the Gomoa Dominase District Police Command for his alleged involvement in the theft of 20 cows valued at GH¢200,000.

The incident occurred at the Gomoa Dominase Onion Market in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, Ghana.

According to police sources, the suspect and his accomplices are believed to have stolen over 20 cows from various individuals in the Gomoa Dominase area.

They purportedly sold the stolen cattle to butchers at Awutu Bawjiase and utilized a portion of the proceeds to purchase additional cows from the northern region, subsequently adding them to his father’s livestock.

Reports indicate that despite possessing over 1,000 cows, neither the suspect nor his father had reported any thefts prior to this incident.

One of the victims, Umar Inusah, who spoke to Spy News on behalf of the affected individuals, recounted how the suspects would masquerade as ordinary market-goers during the day, secretly identifying the large cows for theft.

Under the cover of night, they would return to steal the identified cattle, subsequently selling them to butchers.

Umar Inusah further disclosed that a vigilant farmer, witnessing the suspicious activities, alerted a police officer residing nearby, ultimately leading to the arrest of the primary suspect.

However, his accomplices remain at large.

Expressing concern over the ongoing disturbances caused by Fulani herdsmen in the Gomoa Dominase area, Umar Inusah urged the government to take decisive action to address the situation promptly.

Meanwhile, the Gbetsile Circuit Court in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region has sentenced 23-year-old Courage Akadro, to five years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing a Toyota Camry car.

The court presided over by Eleanor Kakra Banes Botchway, sentenced Mr Akadro based on his plea of guilty to two charges of unlawful entry and stealing.

The convict was sentenced to three years in hard labour on the first count and five years in hard labour on count two; however, the sentence ran concurrently.

Inspector Maxwell Ayeh, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Madam Millicent Kwetey Maku, who resided at Mataheko-Afienya, on May 19, 2024, at about 1000 hours, drove her black Toyota Camry private car from her place of abode to Mataheko second.

He said the complainant parked the car with the engine on at the Mataheko second bridge area by the roadside to purchase some items in a nearby shop.

The Court heard that Mr Akadzro took advantage of the situation, unlawfully entered the vehicle, and drove it in the direction of Afienya, but the complainant raised an alarm and subsequently chased him with the help of some commercial motorbike riders.

The prosecution noted that the accused person lost control of the vehicle and collided with a red Toyota Corolla while he was being pursued.

The vehicle’s engine subsequently stalled and Mr Akadzro was apprehended and handed over to Afienya Police together with the vehicle as exhibit.

He was charged with the offence and put before the court after an investigation.
