The allocation of second phase of the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign will commence in Lagos State on Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Monday while giving an update on the pandemic. He said the State has received its allocation of 299,992 doses of the Moderna vaccine and an elaborate plan has been developed to administer the vaccines in 150 centres across the State.
The increase in the number of centres from over 70 to 150, according to the governor, is to prevent the gathering of large crowds and ensure that the vaccination campaign does not itself become a super spreader event, considering that the strain fueling the new wave of the pandemic is a very virulent one.
Moderna vaccine is a two-dose vaccine, like the AstraZeneca vaccine that was deployed during the first phase of vaccination, which means that after receiving the first dose, a date to return for the second and final dose would be given.
While Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the administration of the vaccine would be based solely on appointment; he urged Lagosians not to visit any of the allocated facilities until they have registered on the Federal Government’s vaccination portal nphcda.vaccination.gov.ng and have been given an appointment date.
He also emphasised the Moderna vaccine should not be mixed with the Astra Zeneca vaccine; stressing that only persons who have not been previously vaccinated at all should take it.
“If you have previously taken one dose of the Astra Zeneca vaccine, please exercise patience as we await delivery of a fresh allocation from the Federal Government.”
“Our ultimate goal in Lagos State is to vaccinate 60percent of our residents in good time. Let me remind all Lagosians that Covid-19 vaccination in Nigeria is free of charge,” he said.
Epidemiology update as at August 21, 2021, shows that Lagos had recorded a total of 70,563 confirmed cases of COVID-19 out of which 60,716 have recovered in-community, and 4,387 are currently being managed actively in-community.
Also, while managing the pandemic, about 5,551 patients have been admitted into various COVID-19 care centres in the State with 506 registered fatalities.
Of the deaths recorded, 135 occurred in the third wave.
