Inspector Ubi Ebri attached to the Area Command patrol team of the Delta State Police Command who allegedly shot and killed a civilian, Mr Onyeka Ibe has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and being prosecuted for murder.
A release issued by the Command’s PPRO, DSP Bright Edafe said after an Orderly room trial the police officer was found culpable for the murder of Mr Ibe and consequently slammed with a dismissal verdict.
He was consequently arraigned before a Magistrate Court and charged with murder; when on April 5, 2023 along Asaba/Ugbolu Road in Asaba Magistratarial District, he unlawfully killed Onyeka by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law Cap 21 Vol 1, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria (2006).
Today, Wednesday, April 19, the suspect, Inspector Ubi Ebri was arraigned before the Asaba Magistrate Court which ordered that he be remanded at the Ogwashi-uku Correctional centre while investigation on the matter continues as his case file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP,for advise.
His plea was not taken and bail was not granted to him.
The case has been adjourned to May 8, 2023.
“The Command has therefore tasked officers and men to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria (as amended).”
The release said the Command hoped that the verdict and prosecution of the erring officer would serve as a deterrent to other officers.
