The newly-elected President-General (PG) of the Ughelli Descendants Union (UDU), Chief Samuel Akpemegi, has reiterated his resolve to work in the interest of the people of Ughelli, ensuring the security of life and property in the Ughelli Kingdom.
The PG who sought collaboration with the journalists in his domain urged them to assist through the reporting of correct facts, admitting that the issue of security and welfare of the people cannot be handled by one man alone.
Chief Akpemegi stated this during a chat with members of the Ughelli Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) who paid him a courtesy visit Monday, November 13, 2023 in Ughelli, Delta State.
PG Akpemegi said his concern is how there can be peace and development in the area. He explained that even before he became the UDU PG, he had been working behind the scene for a peaceful Ughelli kingdom as he had been part of different conflict resolution committees for various communal disputes including that of Otor-lwhreko/Ekiugbo communal clashes and some others.
“My people deemed me fit to work because l am ready to work. To be the President-General of the Ughelli Descendant Union is not just a position you come to pick and you use for your personal use. I came to pick the position because l want to serve my people, ” he stated.
Fielding questions from the journalists on some of his developmental plans for the kingdom as the new man in the helm of affairs of the UDU, Chief Akpemegi who was flanked by ASP Macaulay lmonin (Rtd), a security officer, said his plan is to ensure that the kingdom witness rapid development in every sphere of life and for the people of the area to feel safe and secured in the land including the provision of relevant educational facilities for the people. He commended the Delta State government for it’s efforts so far in building many schools and providing learning facilities in the schools.
He said, “l think the government has actually done a lot for Ughelli as far as education is concerned. On the issue of building more schools, employment of teachers and security to the schools, they have actually tried. All we seek for is more help from the state to the local government most especially the issue of scholarship because it is not everyone that actually have the finance to see their children through school.”
The PG however pleaded with the state government still to “help in the issue of security because where there is no security, the economy of the place will mot move. I beg the state to actually see how they can assist Ughelli as a local government and as a kingdom to see how we can actually tighten up the issue of security.”
Earlier in a speech, the chairman of the Ughelli Correspondents Chapel of the NUJ, Comrade Sunday Apah, stated that the journalists are ready to use their their various platforms to assist the Ughelli Descendants Union to promote the peace and development of the area.
