The nation wide strike action planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC to commence tomorrow has been suspended.
The proposed strike was in reaction to the removal of Premium Motor Spirit (fuel) subsidy by the federal government.
At a meeting between representatives of the federal government and labour, yesterday, the issues associated with the removal of fuel subsidy were thrashed.
The meeting was at the instance of the Speaker of the House of Reps, Hon Femi Gbamiajiabila’s intervention.
Also on the FG side were: Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Festus Keyamo (SAN) while the Presidents of the TUC and NLC, Comrade Engr Festus Osifo and Comrade Joseph Ajaero were on the side of Labour.
The meeting ended at 1040pm and the following resolutions which led to the suspension of the planned strike were reached:
* A joint committee of the federal government and labour is to be established to propose a review of wage increase and establish framework and timeline for implementation.
* Federal government and labour to review World Bank financed cash transfer scheme and propose inclusion of low-income earners in the program.
* Federal government and labour to revive the CNG conversion program earlier agreed with labour centers in 2021 and work out detailed implementation and timing.
* Labour centers and federal government to review issues hindering effective delivery in the education sector and propose solutions for implementation.
* Labour centers and federal government to review and establish the framework from completion of the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries.
* Federal government to provide a framework for the maintenance of roads and expansion of rail networks across the country.
* All other demands submitted by the TUC and NLC to the FG will be assessed by the joint committee
Meanwhile, the NLC and TUC are continuing engagements with the FG to secure closure on the resolutions above, and the labour centers and the federal government will meet on June 19, 2023 to agree on implementation framework.
