Call for investigation and prosecution of perpetrators

By John Egie

Delta State Past Students Leaders commonly called Comrade Community have unequivocally condemned reported cases of sexual molestation of female university students allegedly carried out under the guise of Ozoro Festival.

A statement issued and signed by the president, secretary and public relations officer of Comrade Community, Comrade Akpotoboro Oghenemaro, Comrade Andrew Efole Esq and Comrade Peter Yisah respectively clearly stated without ambiguity that no tradition, culture, or festival justifies sexual harassment, assault, or any form of gender-based violence.

” Culture is meant to promote unity, dignity, and moral integrity—not to provide cover for criminal acts and human rights violations.

” The disturbing reports surrounding this incident are unacceptable and deeply troubling. Such acts not only endanger the safety and dignity of young women but also tarnish the rich cultural heritage that our communities are known for. Tradition must evolve to protect, not harm.

” We call on all relevant law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, thoroughly investigate these allegations, and ensure that all perpetrators are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

” Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Any delay or negligence will only embolden offenders and perpetuate a culture of silence and fear.”

Citing Section 34(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended, which ,guarantees the right to dignity of the human person and strictly prohibits inhuman or degrading treatment and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) 2015 which clearly criminalizes rape and all forms of sexual violence with prescribed severe penalties for offenders; Comrade Community urged that in the instant case, those laws should be fully enforced without compromise.

” We also urge community leaders, traditional institutions, youth groups, and festival organizers to take proactive responsibility in ensuring that cultural events are safe, structured, and respectful of human dignity. Safeguard mechanisms must be put in place to prevent any form of abuse during such gatherings.

” As a community of leaders and advocates, we stand firmly with the victims and call on society at large to break the silence, speak out against injustice, and support efforts aimed at protecting women and girls.

” No cultural celebration should come at the cost of a woman’s safety, dignity, or future. ” This should never happen again” the statement added.
