Class 75 of old students of Government College, Ughelli has donated laboratory equipment and some reagents worth the sum of N1,678,050 and handed over same to the school through the 1st Vice President of the National Executive Council, NEC of Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association, world wide, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje.
Prefect of the Class, Mr Mode Augustine while presenting his address during the Class’ reunion and 2022 Assembly event held on Friday, January 21 at the school’s auditorium said the gesture was part of the old students’ commitment to giving back to the school having recently donated some set of tables and benches to various houses in the school.
“Our young sailors, you have it as a duty to ensure the safe keeping of these equipment and others so donated for your use. Jealously guide them so that more can be added.” He said.
The equipment were later handed over to Olorogun Albert Akpomudje who on behalf of NEC secured a loud assurance from the school’s Principal, Mr. Samson Obor that the equipment will be safely kept and put to meaningful use before handing them over to the school.
Earlier in a remark, the school Principal assured that the standard of teaching and learning in the school remains high and climbing as performance of the students in external examinations is iconic. But he requested, among others, the donation of CCTV cameras to be installed in all dormitories of the school to check bullying by senior students.
Mr Mode Augustine had also requested permission from NEC of GCUOBA to bust Chief Demas Akpore, a student of Class 45 and who later became a principal of the school. But in response, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje said the request was a tall one as NEC had sealed the busting of personalities limiting it to that of the Founding Principal of the school, Carter.
The event witnessed the shout of three hearty cheers to honour Captain P.K. Gbemre who was the Cadet Commandant and Head of School in 1975, as members of Class 75 shared memories of old times while in school.
Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of career talks by Dr Edewor Omovie who spoke on General Professional Pathways, Dr Dan Orumwense who spoke on Medical Pharmacy, Zinno Orara on Fine, Applied Arts, Skills and Talents and Cyril Kiwamu on Education; all Speakers are members of Class 75.
