The Acting Vice Chancellor, Edo State University Uzairue, Prof. Dawwood Omolumen Egbefo says one of the major consequences of absence of patriotic commitment to a national cause is an increasing poor attitude to work by Nigerians, especialy in public workplaces which many still perceived as alien institutions.
Prof Egbefo made the assertion while delivery his opening address during a training workshop organized for non academic staff of the university on the 21st century in Nigerian universities administration.
The acting VC adding that the university has been undertaken series of training programmes aimed at improving the skills of staff for effective discharge of their duties and responsibilities saying the training is special as it’s championing a new cause, a new focus and a new direction in the promotion of administrative responsibilities of staff.
He stated further that social history shows clearly that the major problem since independence have been due mainly to negative attitude and dysfunctional habits and patriotic commitment which has remained an obstacle in the national development.
“We believe that the only way to arrest this degenerate state is to train and retrain the staff and those responsible for the people”, he added.
While paying great tributes to the former VC, Engr. Prof Emmanuel Aluyor for his successes in bringing the university to a world class, said a best Vice Chancellor can fail if the attitude of the staff are not fully adjusted to the philosophy and orientation to the corporate goods, hence the directorate of professional training and development should take up the challenge of remoulding the attitude of the staff through constant training and staff development.
While also assuring that his administration is committed in its resolve to strengthen transparency and accountability to minimize waste and sanitise the university, insisted on a new commitment to service, a positive set of norms and the promotion of attitude and conduct that will sustain the university.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Acting Director of professional training and development, Dr. Anthony Iyoha thanked the acting Vice Chancellor Prof Dawood for his listen ears and act promptly on request, also thanked other management team for the training workshop for the non academic staff of the university.
Welcoming the participants to the training workshop, said the knowledge and experience acquired from the training will in no small measure will assist them to improve tremendously on their professional responsibilities.
Speaking at the workshop, the former Registrar of the university, Dr. Mrs. Isoken Ogboro said a university setting, effective and efficient in the service delivery can be measured in the quality and the administrative performance of the university community as a whole.
Mrs. Ogboro whose lecture titled: Communication and Proper Documentation For Effective and Efficient Service Delivery In A University System, said effectiveness and efficiency of a university can also be measured in the timeline in which the strategy for implementing administrative policies are successfully carried out.
She recognized that the efficient and effective management of the university system to achieve the set goal, the administrators must be compete in the 21st century managerial knowledge and skills in order to deliver efficient and effective service in the system.
Other speakers at the training workshop include the university Registrar, Habib Ekhalefo whose lecture titled: The Role of the Faculty Officer in University Administration. While Dr Osagie Osifo, the university Bursar talked on Financial Administration in Edo State University Uzairue and Mrs. Agnes Umeadi, senior Assistance Registra spoke on Perceived Shortcomings in Administration Process, Avenue For Constructive Suggestion and Ordering Solution.
It will be recalled that the university had earlier organized a similar training workshop for academic staff for 21st century modern teaching.
