A Nongovernmental organisation, NGO, Grenlight Travel Initiative (GTI) that is involved in activism for the welfare of African students worldwide has drawn the attention of President Bola Tinubu to the sufferings of Nigerian students in Mauritius due to a crackdown on them by the authorities of that country.
President of the NGO, Mr Felix Akpoyibo in a statement personally signed by him and made available to the Spy News urged Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in his capacity as the President of Nigeria and Chairman of ECOWAS to stir and mobilise other Heads of States and Governments in Africa to intervene and rescue the students from the ongoing crackdown orchestrated by Mauritian authorities.
GTI said they have been inaudated with series of complaints and petitions by agonising students on their plight and pleaded for the intervention of the Federal Government to assuage their sufferings.
The NGO alleged that the Mauritian authorities refused to release relevant documents to Nigerian students who had paid their tuition fees in Mauritius to commence their academic work. But in response to the demand for such, the Mauritius authorities: Police and Immigration, went on cracking down of the students, arresting and detaining them unjustly and even exposing them to physical torture and harassment.
A source also alleged that a Nigerian female student has lost her life in the ordeal . The fatality according to the source resulted from the crackdown .
“We call on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene and stop the crackdown on Nigerians students to avoid further fatalities.
“We also call on the African Union to investigate the allegation and take necessary action to redress the situation.” The NGO said.
