The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria on Friday inducted 54 nurses who are graduates from the Department of Nursing Science of Edo State University, Uzairue, Edo.
Director of Special Duties, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Yahaya Summi who represented the Registrar General, Faruk Umar Abubakar administered the oath taking/induction.
He congratulated the students for successful completion of their degree program of the University, and also passing the professional examinations; saying it was a great achievement and the Council is proud of them.
The Director also appreciated the school management and lecturers of the nursing department, for their commitment, support and contributions both academically, morally and financially towards the victorious accomplishment.
“I want to also congratulate the admin department of the nursing sciences of this great University for nurturing and grooming you both in character and learning”.
He said the essence of the occasion was to celebrate the graduates transition from being nursing students, to been registered nurses, adding that the gathering was to formerly receive them into the noble profession of nursing through oath taking and induction.
Further, he stated that the occasion was also to remind them of their fundamental responsibility as nurses, saying that it was only after the induction that their names would be entered into the Council’s register and thereafter would be addressed with the title: registered nurses.
Summi pointed out that a lot is expected of them as nurses adding; that nursing is a profession that is tremendously demanding compassion and helpfulness meaning that nurses are required to be compassionate, kind and attentive in dealing with old patients and clients.
”The BSc program as you are all aware is high standard of education programs, designed to produce nurses who are adequately equip with the requisite knowledge, clinical skills and professional intelligence to render safe and efficient health care to the populace”.
Hence, the program is both academics and professional in nature, designed not only to improve the quality of nursing services in Nigeria but also to empower practitioners to make sound nursing diagnosis, design appropriate nursing care life line; implement and evaluate comprehensively.
“As prospective graduate nurses, you have attained high standard of education in clinical skills that will enable you to render safe and efficient health care services as you go into the labour market; you will be fully accountable for your own decisions, actions and attitudes, you must be able to perform nursing skills verities of health care settings”.
The Director however encouraged them to learn and work with other nurses who are already in health practice by accepting corrections, improve and make adjustments positively when necessary, and avoid unnecessary mistakes.
He further encouraged them to use the available opportunity to acquire higher degrees in nursing as he appealed to them to be credible ambassadors, adhere to the ethics of the profession by display of honesty and humility in the course of their practice at all times.
According to him, Nigeria is faced with very serious challenge of migration of health professionals adding; that WHO encouraged migration of health professionals and appealed as some of them may desire to leave the country, they should be good ambassadors of Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor said the oath taking/induction, was the second for qualified graduating nursing students of the Institution.
Aluyor asserts the Institution had groomed and equipped them to effectively take up the challenges in the nursing profession.
“Edo University Uzairue prides itself as a modern University that develop leaders; as nursing graduates from the University, we as management are confident of the fact that the knowledge you have received will act as catalyst needed to succeed in life.
“As graduate nurses, yours is a call to service. Your mandate to all patients include medication, treatment administration, patient education and case management.
“You will be required to offer these services as they are crucial to saving lives.
“It is my charge to you that as you go out to render this services, do so with every sense of pride and the defense of your Alma mater,” he said.
The VC asserts that the University is proud to have modern simulation equipment such as the simman 3G Manikin and different low fidelity and high fidelity Manikins deployed in the training of nursing students.
He added that the University is the first in West Africa to procure the Anatomage table in the teaching of Anatomy, saying that an Anatomage table is the most advanced digital tool in the teaching of Anatomy in the medical sciences.
Aluyor congratulated the graduates and wish them successful career ahead.
In the same vein, the chairperson of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Edo State Chapter, Mrs. Elizabeth Jugo said the new graduates are now certified nurses and are qualified to work in any health facilities in the country.
“I urge you to adhere to the rules of professional conduct which are set of ethical guidelines binding on every nurse in Nigeria.”
Earlier, in her welcome address, the Head of Department, Nursing Science, Dr. Nwamaka Kanikwu said the inductees are the second set of nurses produced by the University with BSC Nursing having spent five years in the Institution.
Kanikwu said nursing profession is a unique one that adds value to patient’s care, impact patient’s well being and preserve patient’s right.
“Today, we are marking the admission of the newly qualified graduate nurses into this ancient and noble profession of nursing.
“A profession whose members are largely known with the three major attributes of empathy, patience and compassion.
“I rejoice with the inductees for attaining this enviable height in both educational and professional career, thereby becoming members of the nursing profession in Nigeria.”
The induction lecture title: The Competent Nurse:
Adding Value To Patient Care Through Best Practices, was delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) Roselynd Ejakhanghe Esewe, from the University of Benin.
High point of the event was the oath taking/induction and presentation of award to the two best graduating nurse.
