Edo State University, Uzairue is to inaugurate its own FM radio station soon.
It would be transmitting on 90.5 peak FM with coverage of the campus activities and its environs.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor made the disclosure a couple of days ago, during the media briefing for the Institution’s forth coming third Convocation event.
He asserts, it was another record achievement for the University.
Further, he disclosed, that the Convocation lecture titled: “The Role of African Universities In The Development of African States” will be delivered by the President, Association of African Universities (AAU), Prof. Bakri Osman Saeed.
Engr. Alex Ogedegbe, President, Nigeria Academy of Engineering would be presiding as Chairman, while the Minister of Health, Dr. Ehanire is expected to be the special guest of honor.
The Convocation lecture which is expected to be via zoom, is part of the series of activities lined up to mark the event, he added.
Also, Award of honorary doctorate degree (Honoris Causa) would be conferred on Asue Ighodalo and Barr. Mike Ozekhome (SAN) during the event, Aluyor said.
According to him, it was in recognition of the recipients’ illustrious career and wonderful contributions to development of the Nigeria nation.
The Vice – Chancellor reveled, that a total of 142 students
found worthy both in character and learning, will be awarded the University’s first and post graduate degrees in their various disciplines.
As part of activities lined up for the event, the State governor, Godwin Obaseki will commission some projects in the University; including the Campus FM radio station.
Prof. Aluyor asserts; the State Government’s vision that the University should be a centre of excellence was very much on course, considering her achievements in the last few years.
Hence, she has remained in session and maintained a stable academic calendar since inception, graduating students as at when due, irrespective of several challenges.
“Since its inception, the University has grown with an increase in the number of faculties, departments, approved and accredited programmes, and students”.
State of the University:
Growing from the background of two faculties at inception, the University has eight faculties; three faculties in the College of Medical Sciences; faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences and Clinical Sciences, while other five are faulties of Arts, Management and Social Sciences, Applied Health Science, Engineering, Law and Sciences.
Further, he said all programmes across the eight faculties have approvals and accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC).
While programmes that are professional such as Medicine, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Engineering, Law, and Accounting have approval and earned full accreditation from the supervising bodies.
This is as the University has also commenced her postgraduate programmes leading to higher degree, and graduated two sets of undergraduates.
Also, a conversion programme has been started for graduates of Polytechnics and Monotechnics who are desirous of a bachelor’s degree.
On student population, he said at inception in 2015/2016 academic session, the NUC approved the quota of 500 students for admission into the University but as at today, the quota has been increased to 1,800 with students population of 2,500 hoping that the population would increase at the end of the 2021/2022 academic session.
Achievement:
Prof. Aluyor enumerated some the University’s achievements to include: first in West Africa to adopt the CANVAS Learning Management System; first Medical Training Institution in Nigeria with an Anatomage Table; Ranked 4th best University in Nigeria by the Time Higher Education 2021 Impact ranking; establishment of a Molecular laboratory that can be used to test Covid-19 sample, amongst others.
